Budget for production: UKP 50,000 Will crew members receive a DVD of the final film: Yes About the Film: Tooting Broadway is an urban crime drama set in 2010, one day before the Tamil Protests outside The Houses of Parliament. Tooting Broadway’s locations naturally lend a gritty feel to a fast paced story that highlights a rarely seen gang culture – Tamils. The film opens with the murder of a prostitute, Kayal, whose connection to characters in the film has explosive consequences. This is the story of Arun, a man who has forged a life away from his past criminal ties, who returns to stop his younger brother participating in criminal act that could ruin his life. Arun is given 24 hours to stop him, by his boss, the mysterious Marcus, a man whose power doesn’t need to be stated, it is simply felt. During the day he meets up with his estranged, religious fanatic mother, an old girlfriend and recalls the moment his life changed direction when he first encounters Marcus. The characters all have their own stories to tell and contribute to Arun’s day, particularly his old girlfriend, Trisha, who is struggling with a hard decision on the eve of her arranged marriage. The love story between Arun and Trisha is told in flashbacks, as we see Arun’s character evolve from directionless second generation Asian, to the committed member of English society that occupies the present day. Arun manages to find his brother and convince him that he has options that don’t include crime. It would seem at this point Arun is ready to leave once more... Karuna the leader of The Wolfpack, spends his day searching for answers as to who killed Kayal. Arun’s history with Kayal means that when he is made aware of her death he is forced to examine his conscience and values. Does he revert to the persona he left behind and fulfil his duty to his community and old friends, or does he continue down the path of atonement he has chosen? The climax builds as Arun is convinced by his old friend Karuna, to respect his roots and avenge the girl’s death. Retaliation against the presumed killers, The Croydon Jaffna Boyz, is planned, but when they reach their destination, the tables are turned on The Wolfpack and they find themselves fighting for their lives. The film uses themes such as family, loyalty, honour and obedience to the state, to propel the story above the average gang film. It also utilises a community and culture rarely seen; the Tamil Gangs whose infamy is such that Scotland Yard have their own taskforce dedicated to stopping them. This film caters to the taste of youth and adults alike, as it contains elements that have broad appeal. Shooting dates: August 2010 TBC Proposed release dates: February 2011 TBC
