CLAY is a 90 minute drama for the BBC, which is being adapted and produced by Peter Tabern of Childsplay. The original novel is written by David Almond. Peter produced Featherboy, Stig of the Dump and Johnny and the Bomb. The director is to be confirmed.
This dark children’s tale is set in Tyneside in 1965 and tells the story of Davie and how his life changes when a strange boy, Stephen Rose, moves into his neighbourhood.
STEPHEN ROSE Aged between 16-21 Stephen is sent to live with ‘Crazy Mary’ as organised by the local church after he was expelled from the Seminary where he was training to be a Priest. He is intense, intelligent and forthright, one minute innocent and the next plotting. H He is manipulative and uses this power for his own gains. He becomes the evil which Davie has to fight against. His mesmeric energy affects children and adults alike. Very challenging for a young actor.
MARTIN MOULD Ages 17 – 23, physically imposing and the local bully. He drinks and smokes and takes pleasure in terrorizing Davie and Geordie with his gang mates. Thinks with his fists and comes to a sticky end thanks to Stephen and his creation.
SKINNER & POKE Mould’s entourage. Spend their time chasing Davie and Geordie with Mouldy. They should both be characterful looking. They come good after Mouldy meets his end and become friends with Geordie.
MARIA O’CALLAGHAN Should look in their teens. Is at school with Davie and Geordie and has a crush on Davie. Pretty, catholic, sweet natured and always believes in Davie. They go out on a date to the local park and eat ice cream on the swings.
FRANCES (GIRL) Should look in their teens. Maria’s best friend, and the more open and upfront of the pair. Says what she thinks and takes action accordingly.
